One of the most wonderful experiences a mother can have is the one she experiences while breastfeeding her baby. Not only does it create a special bond between mother and baby, but it is also very healthy for both. Breastfeeding and weight loss go hand-in-hand. As long as a mother does not over eat and as long as she gets some exercise, she will lose weight. Breastfeeding burns 600 calories per day. This is true, only if she does not use any supplemental feedings. The nice part about it, is that the stored fat around the hips, buttocks, and lower body is the first to be reduced.
Breastfeeding mothers should always be sure to eat well-balanced meals, and drink plenty of water. Exercise is recommended, but not strenuous exercise. There are some studies that were done at the Adult Fitness Program at Indiana University, a Bloomington, that suggest exercise causes and increase in the lactic acid found in breast milk, after exercise.
They also state that this high content of lactic acid creates a bitter taste that is refused by many babies. Well, they failed to mention that the exercise went past the point of exhaustion, and that they offered the babies bottles instead of just letting them nurse 30 minutes after exercise. Contrary to these reports, regular normal exercises including aerobics, dancing, and even jogging, caused no detectable increase in lactic acid when tested. It is also said that women who exercise produce more milk than mothers who do not nurse their babies.
Before starting an exercise program, you should always consult with your doctor, especially after you have just given birth. Exercise is usually not recommended, until 4-6 weeks after delivery. Always wear a supportive and comfortable bra, to help support your growing needs. It is a good idea to nurse your baby just before you leave the house. This will not only keep the baby happy while you are gone, but it will decrease the weight you must carry while jogging, dancing or walking.
It is possible to lose more weight while breast feeding. With 600 being the average calories burned in one day of breast feeding, it is best if you take it slow, and be sure to rehydrate and feed your body nutritious meals. Breast feeding is good for you and your baby.

So the big question is does it work? Holly's Fit Yummy Mummy program comes with a basis in good nutritional principles. If you adopt her ideas, you will definitely lose that baby weight. However, there is no magic wand here - you have to commit to the program. If you follow Holly's recommendations, and are totally committed to changing your eating habits as well as working out daily, you'll be able to have a leaner and fitter version of your body.

Holly has started the book with a goal setting section, as it's absolutely crucial that you are aware of what you want to achieve. Then she starts to cover some very important basic information about your metabolism. Next section is where she gets into the real meat of this program - the food. Her program is about changing your lifestyle by basing it on clean, whole food. There's no way you'll be hungry with this plans as she encourages eating about every 3-3 1/2 hours.

The "slip-ups" section is incredible as it describes why there's no need to panic if you screw-up, and what will put you back on track almost immediately when you do.

I was thrilled with the section on alternatives food to choose for snacks instead of the usual junk food. Since we're talking a program to change your lifestyle, you won't find any gimmicky ideas (no liquid diets, strange foods, or punishment). The nutritional section is not only applicable, but solid as well. I could go into my kitchen at anytime and remake any meals without having to break a sweat.

Now we're on to the workout program (where the goal is to be breaking a sweat). I appreciated Holly's explanation of why being the "cardio queen" is actually not a good thing, and what you can do to change that. She describes how resistance training is the key to achieving that leaner, fitter body you, and everyone else, is hoping to have (and she set a great example that it works as she looks fabulous herself).

You will see this workout plan is actually a highly effective "interval-based" training program. You can fine-tune the 16 week workout schedule, which is based on 4 different formats, so it is in line with your personal goals as well. While it may look a bit complicated to start with, once you hit the section of photos of Holly doing the exercises, you'll see it's not hard. I would suggest printing this part so you'll have it to refer to as needed.

One of the great things you'll find in the workout section is how easily you can do these exercises with minimal equipment and time, so they'll fit well in your already overloaded schedule. The great thing is you can do these workouts with just a mat, a bench or step, simple dumbbells, swiss ball and medicine ball. Compared to bulky gym equipment, this is a minimal amount of equipment to give you lots of results.

The index lists your goal setting worksheets: how to create your own workout journal, information about food labels, sample menus, survival tips for grocery shopping, a fat loss troubleshooting checklist, as well as a load of extra exercise within an archive of full instructions.

How Much Exercise to Lose Weight? What You Can Do to Effectively Lose Weight

"How much exercise to lose weight?" You ask. Believe it or not, it may actually be less than you think!

In this article I am going to talk about what I've been doing whilst on the Fit Yummy Mummy program. Before I started this program I thought that the more cardio I did, the more weight I would lose.

How wrong I was!

I'm going to talk now about what I do in the way of exercise to lose weight:

1. I do 15 minutes a day, 3 days a week of resistance training.

Resistance training involves using your body weight (or even free weights) to strengthen and build muscle. No, I'm not going to look big and bulky because women just aren't built for that, but men might go that way if they follow a good program!

The types of exercises I might do (this isn't an exhaustive list - you will need to check out the programs on my site if you want to know what you can do) are:

- Squats (different variations)
- Lunges ("normal" lunges and reverse lunges)
- Pushups
- Bench press and other exercises using dumbells
- Step ups
- Various core exercises

Of course I don't do all of these in one go. My routine only goes for 15 minutes, so I might do 6 exercises in that time with reps of 6-12 depending on the type of exercise (and how much it hurts!).

2. I do 15 minutes a day, 3 days a week of intervals.

Intervals are great! They're effective - even more effective than doing steady state cardio! So if you're thinking that 30 minutes to an hour on the treadmill is going to do you any good, think again! Try 15 minutes of intervals and you will see much better results! Also, you will have more time to do other things!

My intervals might work like this:

3 minute warm up (if I haven't done resistance training on that day).
30 seconds high intensity
1 minute low intensity

I sometimes jump rope for the high intensity then walk on the spot for low. You can also try running (or even sprinting) for high, then walking for low.

Again, if you decide to purchase either of the programs featured on the site below, you will learn exactly what you need to do.

And that's all I do. That's a total of 90 minutes a week. I can do 30 minutes a day, 3 times a week, or 15 minutes a day, 6 times a week. As long as you do 15 minutes of each type of exercise, 3 times a week, then you will start to see results (in only 3 weeks I had lost weight and noticed some definition in my arms and legs - amazing!).

Want to Lose Weight? How Not Eating Enough Can Cause You to Gain Weight!

Yes, you read it right. Not eating enough can cause you to gain weight, not lose weight! If you want to lose weight, then this can come as quite a surprise.

Why is this so?

It has everything to do with your metabolism. The higher your metabolism, the more fat your body burns. If you have a low metabolism, then of course the amount of fat your body burns is reduced.

Skipping meals or not eating enough actually helps your body to become really good at storing fat. Why? Because it needs to, in case it is starved again in future! Your body needs fuel to work properly, so if you don't provide it with enough, it will take as much as it can the next time you feed it and store it as fat so it will have fuel the next time it is starved of food.

Sounds logical, doesn't it? So how do we effectively lose weight?

First you need to calculate your Basal Metabolic Rate (or BMR). The formula to help you calculate this is in the Weight Loss Tips section of the website below.

Once you have worked this out, it's time to start completing a food diary. Write down what you are eating and the quantities consumed. From there you can work out whether you're consuming enough.

A great way to increase your metabolic rate is to eat more often. Eat around 5 to 6 times a day, spreading your calories out over the day, and you will see a huge difference.

Another way to tell if you're eating enough calories is to check your energy levels. If you're feeling like you have no energy or you're making no progress in your fitness program, then it's very likely because you're not eating enough.

Most importantly, most of your calories should be coming from fruit and vegetables. If you're eating a lot of fried or processed foods, these could be sabotaging your weight loss regime, so try to reduce these types of foods as much as you possibly can or even cut them out completely.

So remember, eat at least 5 to 6 times a day, make sure you're eating enough (based on your BMR) and eat as much quality foods as you can. The Fit Yummy Mummy program below takes you through everything you need to know about what to eat to lose weight!

Is there TRUTH in Foods that Speed Up Fat Loss?

"Holly, I happened to come across an article about a lady who successfully lost weight in a course of one year.....The article was interesting alright but the key point which sparked my interest in that, was that she mentioned that having low fat cottage cheese or low fat yogurt just before going to sleep really helped in boosting the metabolism and hence weight loss......

Coupled with this is another article I read in the internet which stated that consuming about 3 six ounce servings of low fat yogurt daily would reduce stomach fat by about 60-80%. Now I would take that statement with a pinch of salt, but on reading both articles I seem to feel there might be at least some level of truth in both."

The quick and matter of fact answer is...There is no ONE magic, metabolism, fat burning food. In the process of fat loss, foods do not actually burn fat.

Fat loss occurs when you burn slightly more calories than what you take in. You can achieve this ideal energy balance by boosting your metabolism though a combination of resistance training, intervals and supportive nutrition.

For the example you posted - There could be hundreds of reasons why this woman lost weight.

Let's break it down to be practical:

The articles states she lost about 4 Stones or 56 pounds in 12 months.

To lose "weight" you simply need to take in slight less than you burn. For her to lose 56 pounds in a year, she simply cut her calories back by about 500 a day. In one week, she lost about a pound, so if there are 52 weeks in a year it is realistic for her to lose 56 pounds. This is one way to explain it.

Now eating the yogurt before going to sleep may be only ONE way she cut back. This strategy may have helped her to not eat a 500 calorie serving of ice cream.

Plus protein based foods do have a higher thermic effect - meaning the processing of protein requires more energy thus burns more calories. This in turn would help keep her metabolism elevated and increase her feelings of feeling satisfied as she cut out a higher calorie, after dinner snack.

Plus, is she exercising? If there is ANY tip you can embrace that works like magic to boost your metabolism and burn more fat....it is to Get More Muscle.

Remember, muscle is your metabolism.

Any food that claims to boost your metabolism but there is no resistance plan in place - is short lived.

If she had a concern for her muscle and was performing resistance training, eating cottage cheese or a low fat, natural yogurt as the last meal of the day will actually help to keep the body fueled during sleep by providing a steady stream of healthy amino acids. These nutrients will be repairing muscles rather than the muscles be at risk of break down as we fast during sleep. This habit in turn keeps your metabolism slightly elevated while you sleep...if you have a concern for resistance training.

Lose weight with dairy? "Only if you're overweight, if you've been eating too little calcium, and if your weight-loss diet isn't too high in protein or too low in calories." says Michael Zemel, the author of the dairy-burns-fat studies. Two other studies have found no impact of dairy on weight. An FTC petition filed by PCRM, will end misleading claims made in the "Milk Your Diet. Lose Weight" and "3-A-Day. Burn More Fat, Lose Weight" promotions. In the FTC petition, PCRM charged that the dairy industry has used false and misleading advertising in its multi million-dollar, celebrity-filled marketing campaign suggesting that consuming milk and other dairy products causes weight loss.

Sure, yogurt (void of high fructose corn syrup) and cottage cheese it may have benefits - but in the big picture of Fat Loss it must work together with ALL the other fat loss habits.

Bottom Line: There are no quick, fix fat zapping foods. In the process of fat loss, you must be able to make changes to your overall eating habits and incorporate an effective workout plan.
