The Truth About Breastfeeding and Weight Loss

One of the most wonderful experiences a mother can have is the one she experiences while breastfeeding her baby. Not only does it create a special bond between mother and baby, but it is also very healthy for both. Not only is it good for baby, but breastfeeding can also help a mother return to her pre-pregnancy weight.
Breastfeeding and weight loss go hand-in-hand. As long as a mother does not over eat and as long as she gets some exercise, she will lose weight. Breastfeeding burns 600 calories per day. This is true, only if she does not use any supplemental feedings. The nice part about it, is that the stored fat around the hips, buttocks, and lower body is the first to be reduced.
Breastfeeding mothers should always be sure to eat well-balanced meals, and drink plenty of water. Exercise is recommended, but not strenuous exercise. There are some studies that were done at the Adult Fitness Program at Indiana University, a Bloomington, that suggest exercise causes and increase in the lactic acid found in breast milk, after exercise.
They also state that this high content of lactic acid creates a bitter taste that is refused by many babies. Well, they failed to mention that the exercise went past the point of exhaustion, and that they offered the babies bottles instead of just letting them nurse 30 minutes after exercise. Contrary to these reports, regular normal exercises including aerobics, dancing, and even jogging, caused no detectable increase in lactic acid when tested. It is also said that women who exercise produce more milk than mothers who do not nurse their babies.
Before starting an exercise program, you should always consult with your doctor, especially after you have just given birth. Exercise is usually not recommended, until 4-6 weeks after delivery. Always wear a supportive and comfortable bra, to help support your growing needs. It is a good idea to nurse your baby just before you leave the house. This will not only keep the baby happy while you are gone, but it will decrease the weight you must carry while jogging, dancing or walking.
It is possible to lose more weight while breast feeding. With 600 being the average calories burned in one day of breast feeding, it is best if you take it slow, and be sure to rehydrate and feed your body nutritious meals. Breast feeding is good for you and your baby.
